Zig Zag Historic Railway and Viaducts, the first rail link to the western region of New South Wales, was internationally recognised as the engineering marvel of its day. The railway crossed three massive sandstone viaducts, passed through two tunnels and traversed two reversing stages on its 150 metre descent to Lithgow Valley’s floor.Take a ride on the Zig Zag, one of Australia’s most exciting stretches of railway. 19th Century Eskbank House offers you a great introduction to Lithgow’s history. You can even see the ‘Possum’, a steam locomotive from Hoskin’s works, which is on display in the grounds. Open Thursday to Monday, 10am – 4pm. Lithgow Heritage Map

At Oakey Park, off Bells Line of Road, you’ll find Zig Zag Brewery, Zig Zag School, miners’ cottages and Oakey Park Colliery Poppet Head. One of Lithgow’s major industrial sites, a wooden poppet head and other industrial artifacts mark this site. Lithgow Heritage Map

Australian Defence Industries’ Small Arms Factory Methven Street, opened in 1912, is famous for its manufacture of the Lee Enfield 303. The Small Arms Museum is open weekends, public holidays or by appointment. Bus tours welcome by appointment. Lithgow Heritage Map

Main Street’s Queen Elizabeth Park has beautiful trees, a spectacular avenue of roses and garden displays. You’ll find toilets, picnic facilities and a playground here and at Endeavour Park on the Great Western Highway. Lithgow Heritage Map
