Blue
Mountains National Park
Located
about 60 km west of Sydney, New south Wales Australia,
the Blue Mountains National park is the heart of a several
parks and reserve systems that together provide the largess
continuos ecosystem in New South Wales. The National
Park
and the reserve system conserves large areas of dissected
plateau which is an important part of the water catchment
system for the huge growing population of the Sydney
urban
area. The Blue Mountains also provides large tracts of
land for recreational opportunities that millions of
local
and overseas tourist utilise every year. The National
Parks that are within the Blue Mountains District Operations
include;
Blue
Mountains National Park - (24,7793 ha {hectares}),
is the largest section within the Blue Mountains District
covering approx 49% of the total area of the park system
(506,007 ha). It surrounds a large section of the urban
ribbon development of the Blue Mountains towns and villages.Access
can be made from most of the roads off the Great Western
Highway and from the Bells Line of Road that runs from
Richmond to Lithgow.
Wollemi
National Park - (138,441 ha {hectares}),
part of huge dissected sandstone plateau. Access is from
either the Putty Rd in the east section or from the Wolgan
Valley and Newnes plateau areas.
Kanangra
Boyd National Park - (65,336 ha {hectares}),
to the west of the Blue Mountains it offers wilderness
activities, camping and adjoins world famous Jenolan Caves.
Yengo
National Park - (2,712 ha {hectares})
to the north east, a great place to visit for a wide variety
of bush experience. Access from the Putty Road via Windsor
or the Central Mangrove Rd through to Wollombi
Gardens
of Stone National Park - (15,031 ha {hectares}),
a new addition to the Park it is an ancient landscape
of majestic cliffs and strange rock formations. Access
is fine from Mudgee Rd via Lithgow and the Wolgan Valley.
Camping at Newnes
Abercrombie
River National Park - (18,995 ha {hectares}),
another new addition to the Blue Mountains National Park,
it can be accessed via Oberon and the Kanangra Boyd National
Park.
There are also two State Recreation areas in the Park
System:
Yerranderie SRA (12,507 ha) and
Parr SRA (5,250 ha {hectares}).
The distinctive landform, the special plants and animals
that are part of the Blue Mountains, combined with the
catchment area potential, makes this area one of the
worlds
greatest National Parks and an important part of Australias
Natural Heritage.
The wilderness areas in many cases are pristine and are
all vital to the biodiversity of this country. |
