Comments: The City of Lithgow was proclaimed in 1889. It became the City of Greater Lithgow in 1977 with it's amalgamation with the Blaxland Shire. Greater Lithgow City Council has an area of 3,470 square kilometres, two thirds of which is National Park with agriculture the other major land use. In addition to urban Lithgow, the City has 12 villages with farming or mining backgrounds, the largest of which are Portland and Wallerawang. The area has a population of 20,032. Lithgow - 11,989, Portland - 2,051, Wallerawang - 2,061. The remainder of the community lives in smaller villages such as Cullen Bullen, Capertee, Lidsdale, Hartley, Tarana or outlying rural areas.In 1998 the name has been changed back to the City of Lithgow
During World War II the population of Lithgow itself was approximately 27,000. (6000 of these were employed at the Small Arms Factory)
